“Daniel Barbarisi plunges into an adventure from another era when he goes in search of buried treasure, guided only by a cryptic poem, a mischievous art collector, and the footsteps another pursuer who died on the quest… Every page draws you deeper into this no-man’s-land where fortune—or tragedy—awaits.” —Christopher McDougall, author of Born to RunWhen Forrest Fenn was given a fatal cancer diagnosis, he came up with a bold plan: He would hide a chest full of jewels and gold in the wilderness, and publish a poem that would serve as a map leading to the treasure's secret location. But he didn't die, and after hiding the treasure in 2010, Fenn instead presided over a decade-long gold rush that saw many thousands of treasure hunters scrambling across the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of his fortune.  Daniel Barbarisi first learned of Fenn's hunt in 2017, when a friend became consumed with decoding the poem and convinced Barbarisi, a reporter, to document his search. What began as an attempt to capture the inner workings of Fenn's hunt quickly turned into a personal quest that led Barbarisi down a reckless and potentially dangerous path, one that found him embroiled in searcher conspiracies and matching wits with Fenn himself. Over the course of four chaotic years, several searchers would die, endless controversies would erupt, and one hunter would ultimately find the chest. But the mystery didn't end there. Full of intrigue, danger, and break-neck action, Chasing the Thrill is a riveting tale of desire, obsession, and unbridled adventure.

Dan writes a good tale, this book I mean. Easy to read, full of interesting anecdotes and he puts a little of himself in there to show his human side. And in the end he waxes nostalgic about what a great adventure it was to chase the thrill of finding Forrest Fenn’s treasure chest, recounting the joy that Forrest brought to so many. Alas, after the chest was found the Rio grande was just a river and the mountains were mere big rocks that had lost their magic. He certainly follows the formula he was taught in school.Do you know the bit of this book that stuck with me the most? Dan noted disdainfully that all the searchers had solves that fit their backgrounds. And I note that Dan’s book fits his background. Obviously graduated from a good school who taught him the art of gotcha journalism. The medaled journalist is the one who brings down the mighty hero, snipping at his heels and reminding us that the hero is just a man, and indeed a flawed man. Our hero of stout heart, daring and intelligence may have accomplished more in his life than 10,000 average men, but Dan isn’t impressed. No, Dan sees lukewarmly at least, truth and virtue in Jack, who has accomplished little and failed much. ButJack talks and writes like a journalist! Ah, he must be trustworthy, because the author feels comfortable with him. Jack, being a friend of a friend and a fellow man from the east, gets a pass from the hard questions. Dan seems to embrace conspiracy when offered by outsiders but when he finally gets a solid lead from a previously revered insider, Dan doesn’t seem to follow up on it with any persistence. My question for you, Dan, did you keep things in proportion?Dan hovers around like a pesky mosquito in Yellowstone, or biddies at a social, and judges our hero unredeemable, at least until the last chapter, when he seems to finally embrace the chase, though Dan never expresses regret for pestering Forrest with guilting questions intended to highlight Forrest’s callousness for not calling off the chase. Dan drones on about the few unfortunate souls who lost themselves from Forrest’s calling us back to the wild. I would rather have the richness of Forrest’s world than the homogenized bland world we seem to be heading for where everything is guaranteed safe and all trails are fully fenced for our protection. I want the freedom to explore off the trail, the opportunity to fail, and the responsibility to own it rather than meekly accepting the Disney version of the world fed to us by government and big corporations. And I want authors to celebrate those who dare to tilt at windmills and those who toil to slow the fence installers.Should we no longer dare to do anything unique or not approved because someone might get hurt? Never mind that my son told people the three trips we took to search for the chest were the most fun he ever had in his life, and It was for me too. Finally, a quest to challenge ourselves against like the days of old! For a few days at least, we soared with a purpose like never before. And, in bravely throwing our all to the contest, we were found wanting. And we grieved. We dusted ourselves off to hope and try again. Briefly, our goal blazed before us, and it mattered more than almost anything else. Dan himself apparently succumbed to temptation and crossed forbidden ground, but he doesn’t own the damage he causes. In the end, it seems the author feels satisfied that his ends justify his means. Me? Not so much. Grade? I give it a D.
